The Francis Forbes Society Essay Competition

Last week I attended the awards ceremony for the 2008 Australian Legal History Essay Competition, which is run by The Francis Forbes Society for Australian Legal History. Abbey's is proud to be one of the sponsors of this competition, which aims to stimulate interest in Australian legal history.

The competition topic was "How can a lawyer defend somebody he or she `knows' is `guilty'? What is it to `know' that somebody is `guilty'?" The winners were Adam Arnold (University of NSW), Sarah Dorn (University of Melbourne) and Ben Nam (St Pius X College Chatswood). You can download the three essays here.
The ceremony was held at the State Library of New South Wales and the Guest of Honour was former Chief Justice of the High Court Sir Gerard Brennan, AC. We were also honoured to be joined by the newest member of the High Court Virginia Bell SC.

Details of the 2009 competion are available from the Society's website. Dave
